This is a reference to the British soldiers during the American Revolution, who wore yellow vests under their red coats. When attacking a certain village who was ready for them, some of them stripped off their red coats in surrender and ran for their lives...wearing their yellow vests. The cavalry's adoption of the color over a hundred years later is a complete coincidence.
