I'm afraid i'll be too far behind do make it into a company, and besides my parents want me to go to college. So am i too aold for ballet???

I am also wondering if I am too old for ballet (I am almost 14). Although I do no wish to become a professional ballerina I am concerned that I will no be able to keep up with the students in my class who have been doing ballet for ages.

You shouldn't worry. I started dancing when I was 13 and only started ballet when I was 14. I thought I might take forever to make it to the level the other girls were at who had been dancing for ages. but I caught up quick because when you are in your teen years you learn more and remember more. Your bones and muscles are readier to take on ballet.
I know dancers who are proffesional who went to college majored in dance and joined a company who started dancing when they were 15 and up. Follow your dreams! YOu can succeed and do anything you want to do. Don't focus on the negative. Think positive. Think you can. Believe in yourself and your wildest dreams can come true in dance. Good luck! Happy Dancing.

Follow your heart

The best way to advance quickly is to keep practicing...everyday do small things that you would do at barr and perfect those before you go onto the next step. once you have the basics down, it makes it so much more easier to go further with everything else. and also, dont try to get far too fast...thats the way injurys happen...when you push yourself too hard too fast.If your just starting, try to go to some simple, first time classes to get you warmed up, and if you like it and think you can go on from there, go to the next step in classes...but keep practcing-you will get there before you know it!! Thumbs Up
and for you guys..its never too late to start dancing..if you want it bad enough, it will come, and if you work hard enough. Its one of those things where if you dont like it,try something else..but if you do,it will come to you as you work hard at it-
i had a good friend who didnt start ballet till she was 14 and she dances for boston ballet now and shes 21. Its all about the heart and if you want it bad enough. Smiler
good luck to all of you-hope all is well

A lot of people start ballet even after twelve years old. My teacher started when she was 15 after she got too tall to be a jockey. Haha its funny, horses and ballet do not mix. But now she dances professionaly and teaches so its ok!
GOOD LUCK! Huggies

Basically I was wondering the same thing, whether I'm too old/fat to do ballet. I'm almost 15, about 5'8 or 5' 9, and like 10 st 2? I haven't really got any backround in dance, I used to dance on and off whne I was younger but nothing major. I don't wanna do it professionally or anything like that, I'd just like to do it as a hobby and think it'd be a nice way of meeting people and being healthy and passing time.
Opinionios?

None of you girls are too old to start doing ballet! I'm not sure what you're so worried about.. ballet is something anyone can do as a hobby or pastime nomatter what age they are.

I'm 19, and I just started ballet last year. (I did it for two years when I was around 6, but quit because I didn't like it.)
And I just went en pointe last month! So don't worry, if I can do it, you can do it. I visited a lot of different studios in my area and believe it or not, there were several women around 40-50 years old just starting ballet. So you can start at any time, but if you want to do pointe, I'd start working towards it now.
I hope that makes some people here feel better.

You are not to old to start ballet, you are to old however to become professional. You wont ever get into a company. Its the harsh reality of professional ballet. Unless you have been doing ballet since you were 5, there is no chance of getting into a company, and even so, professional ballet is VERY competitive. Even girls who are in pre-professional schools are told they will never make it into a company.

I'm almost 21. Is there any hope that with regular practise, I could ever dance en pointe
.

Anousenka, you can dance en pointe if you have the strength, flexibility and technique. Unless you have foot problems there is no reason for you never to dance en pointe. Just make sure you have a good teacher and get their permission first.
