Some of you will no doubt think that I am/was very naive, but since I recently shared my "moment of doubt" with all of you, I thought it only fair to share a high with you also.

Up until my lesson yesterday, my instruction has basically been on steps and patterns. Yesterday, my instructor told me we would work on technique. I said ok without having a clue what he meant. We worked on rumba and cha-cha. He explained how I should be shifting weight from one leg to the other when I do my steps and how I should keep my back straight. At first I wasn't sure what he meant (I had obviously been doing this wrong--but what did I know?) but then I got it (the concept anyway) and I started moving more the way he wanted me to and we danced and it felt WONDERFUL! I felt so much more like I was moving as one with him. It was dancing at a whole different level. I had no idea...I feel like I stepped through a door into a new room of exciting adventure! Rumba just got interesting Yes, I realize that it will take much practice to move in this way naturally and without having to concentrate so much, but that's okay. I don't mind practicing this. It is cool!

Maybe you think I'm silly. Maybe you knew all about ballroom dancing when you started. But I didn't. I didn't know the first thing about any of the dances. There is still so much I don't know. But now that my eyes have been opened, I think I am going to enjoy learning how to dance well.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my good feelings!

Congratulations!!

Technique is, of course, the key to dance. Learning how and where to apply technique to your movement is what make is move away from 'steppy' and 'patterny' and more into movement.

Now - never do LESS. Don't go to a social and revert to the famed 'walking boxstep' that characterizes so much of the 'I learned on the floor' folks... Don't give up technique at all, actually. Remember, an hour doing bad technique (or none at all) puts THAT movement into your muscles as easily as an hour of GOOD technique. That's why so many folks who 'take a lesson' and then revert to social (for instance) never seem to get anywhere.

Go girl!!

Hi CT Chick,

Thank you very much for joining this dance community and especially for sharing all your experiences!

It is a wonderful reminder why so many of us first started to dance, and the joy of "discovery" at each stage of learning and through the various levels that you are and will continue to experience.

Please continue to share!

Regards,

DanceScape

It's precisely this feeling that has carried me through the 'moments of doubt'. Once you're hooked, there's no returning Nice job!

Congratulations! Technique is so important but also so overwhelming that instructors save it until you've learned to move your feet! You are definitely on your way now!!!!
