Did you know that there are more than 15 different types of dances in Flamenco. Next time you see a Flamenco dancer performing, try to see if you can understand what he/she is doing, and to what rhythm. The most common types of Flamenco rhythms are the following:
Tango
Rumba,
Bulerias,
Alegrias,
Seguirillas,
Sevillanas,
Farruca,
Solea por Bulerias,
Solea , and more...

Is there a distinct feel to the different rhythms? Like the difference between rumba and chacha?

Great question, yes there is. There are 3 main categories of feeling and types of songs in Flamenco.

You have your "Cante Jondo",(Deep songs) often related to sadness, death, loneliness, and so on, then comes your "Cante Medio", (Medium songs) not as deep as the "Cante Jondo", but can have elements of joy and sadness, and "Cante Chico" (Light songs) these type of songs are pure joy and fun.

Examples of "Cante Jondo" -> Solea, Siguiriyas...

Examples of "Cante Medio" -> Alegrias, ...
Note: Cante Medio are not usually talk about in books, but the other two are always talked about. So, I don't know if this category really exist or whether it is just a rumour.

Examples of "Cante Chico" -> Rumba, Alegrias, ...

Hola Cat! Are you still there? I am going on a brief vacation to Puerto Rico in a couple of weeks. Do you know anything about Flamenco there? Any names, connections, contacts etc?. Any names of schools or dance instructors? Didn't it used to be very popular? (THere is a Flamenco beach)
