I'm curious... I know Flamenco started in Spain (at least I assume so), but, what is the history of the dance?

Jackson, You are asking a very important, but yet complicated question. Complicated in the sense that the History of Flamenco is not something that could be summarized in a few lines. I encourage you to read the book entitled "Flamenco" edited by Claus Schreiner. I believe this book will better answer your question. Here is what you will find at the back page of the book. "This book, written by a group of dedicated flamenco enthusiasts, traces the history and development of the art of flamenco, that proud, soulful, stirring folk music and dance created by the gypsies of the Andalusian region of Spain in the 19th century. Although the tradition has suffered from misguided attempts at popularization, there are still singers, guitarists, and character of true flamenco. The essays in this book examine the musical, artistic, and spiritual aspects of flamenco as well as its social context and history. The great performers both past and present are identified and discussed; a bibliography, discography, and directory of clubs and organizations will lead the novice onward to fuller appreciation and understanding." I hope this helps. The Cat quote: Originally posted by Jackson: I'm curious... I know Flamenco started in Spain (at least I assume so), but, what is the history of the dance?

Why don't you read "Queen of the Gypsies: The Life and Legend of Carmen Amaya"? You can find the details at http://SevillaPress.netfirms.com/
