Hi, I've been taking flamenco classes for a couple of months now and I still don't have a practice skirt. Everything is so expensive, so I decided to make my own. Unfornately I have been unable to locate a pattern. Does anyone know where I find one?
I just happened to read your postings, and I may be able to help you if you tell me which city you are from. I cannot guarantee it since North America is so big, but you never know.

Alicia: Flamenco skirt patterns are very hard to find. In fact, I just decided to create my own. If you sew, find a midlength 6 or eight pannel skirt, (Butterick, McCall and Simplicity have them)and add a separate circular two layered "ruffle". Cut it round, and cut it on a bias. You won't need to gather it. Don't use a long strip. I used a disposable aluminum vegetable tray to make a pattern for the ruffle out of newspaper. The pattern looks like a big"C". I sew them together-about 8 or 9 sections to make a long fluttery piece. It takes about 4 yards of material for each ruffle, and about 4 yards of material for the skirt. I hem it with bias tape because I hate doing hems. Alternatively, if you can borrow someone else's skirt, you can use it to trace the ruffle for a pattern. All in all, I end up spending about $40-$50 per skirt if I make it. The better skirts are closer to $200, but that is still a bargain compared to what I spend for my ballroom costumes- I am not a good enough seamstress to make my Latin and Smooth costumes. If you don't want to mess with creating pattern pieces, try looking on the net for places that carry Starstyled dancewear. Backbay dancewear in Boston does, as do some other places-River something if I recall. They cost about $40. Hope this helps. Triana

Triana is right, Backbay Dancewear has some great flamenco skirts, some are quite inexpensive. However, if you are interested in a pattern that can be used for costume OR practice apparel, you might want to try a company called Folkwear, they have a really lovely flamenco skirt/top/dress pattern that I used for a friend of mine. I don't think I can post the contact information here, but if you're interested, let me know.

Hi Alicia. I am a clothing designer and a pattern maker. If you wish to send me a drawing or a photo of the skirt you want, along with your waist and hip measurements, I can make you a pattern. Susan bysusan@netaxs.com
