Not that I want to go back to the days of unending flame wars, but I'm wondering if any Pro/Am dancers are reading these boards anymore? It's been so quiet for so long, you know?
I'm still doing Pro/Am, although I've taken the past year off from competition. I was extremely burnt out and nearly quit dancing altogether but I did some travelling and started a new hobby, and somewhere in all that I started working with a new dance style and now am having the kind of fun I used to have.
What's up with the rest of you? Are any of you even out there?

Laura:
I'm curious what your new hobby is and what dance style you are trying now?

Hi Laura,
I'm still here, but seldom post.
I attend a lot of comps videotaping, but haven't been competing that much although I am still dancing pro-am. I changed teachers last fall and am currently concentrating on smooth. I competed in Philadelphia last week and was reasonably pleased with the results (especially since I was having an allergy attack at the time which made it somewhat hard to breathe).
I'll be taping at the Stardust Ball this weekend but won't be dancing again until the American Star Ball next month.

I had been dancing in Pro/Am Standard for about 6 1/2 years, and was about to quit this past January when I decided to give Smooth one more try. I had done Smooth a couple of times before in Amateur partnerships, but had never worked on it with my Pro/Am teacher. It seems to be working out very well from a personal enjoyment/personal satisfaction level. My first Pro/Am Smooth competition will be this July.
I've mentioned my new hobby here in passing: it's learning to read/write/speak Mandarin Chinese. I've been doing it for about a year now and will be travelling to China this June to do some basic touristy stuff.

Laura, Did you find an amateur partner? I'm still taking lessons, however, I've taken a break from pro/am competing, since it's so expensive. cheers, Travels

Hi Travels, have we met in person?
I was dancing Smooth with an amateur in 2002-2003. Then, in late 2003, I hooked up with a different amateur for Standard. Unfortunately he had a series of knee problems and we basically had to take 10 months off while he made time for surgery and recovery. So, I'm on amateur hiatus until August. I've kept doing Pro/Am with my teacher all this time, though, although I haven't been in a competition since last June. I was suffering from extreme burn out and even stage fright, and needed the break. I'm to the point now where I'm looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Hi Laura, No, I don't think we've met in person. Your name seems familiar to me. I think I saw you dance at a comp. in SF a few years ago, and I've read several of your posts here. Good luck with your dancing and learning Chinese!!

Hi Laura
I will be start doing pro-am. Actually this would be the first time I have ever be doing pro-am. Sounds like fun. I broke up with my amateur partner and tried out with Threestep and some other fellows. I will be doing pro-am while I was searching for a partner.
I've noticed you are doing pro-am for a while. Any tips and advices that you can give to me pro-am newbee?

I've done pro-am for about three years. I'm still here. I went to Montreal this summer and had a great time. What kind of advice were you looking for? Pricing? What to do before going? When you go? DancingDiva
